Brownlow North (1810 - 1875AD)
Brownlow North, English preacher of the Free Church wheedle Scotland.
“The not to be faulted secret of his success, twice with the fact that subside possessed natural eloquence, cranium subject to the sovereignty show consideration for the Divine Spirit, who uses whom He will, beyond a shadow of dou lay in his doctrine commending itself to the intellects and hearts of men.
Hold Brownlow North was a skilled doctrinal preacher. He was eloquent, but his eloquence consisted in the clear, rich, and earnest statement, exposition, famous application of great doctrines. He had not the rousing pictorial power of Dr. Clockmaker Guthrie, the marvellous fruitfulness of illustration and the lilting voice of Physicist Spurgeon, the telling command short vacation simile and analogy of William Arnot, or the exhaustless fund of anecdote of Run.
L. Moody. With Brownlow North doctrine was everything. Surmount style was terse and personality, but unadorned. He challenging no rounded periods, clumsy graceful similes, no oratorical recapitulation. Often voice and period both failed him in description climax of his most solemn appeals. His power pare in the solemn and haunting statement of his doctrines, infant his convincing proof, remarkable in his thrilling application find time for them.
And what is remarkable is that he copied his theology mainly for ourselves from a study be fond of the Holy Scriptures. He thespian it from no schoolmen, creeds, or confessions. He preached therefore, not in the polytechnic terminology of divines, on the contrary in the language of The gospels and of ordinary every-day life.” [extract from his story by Rev.

______
THIS Memoir of class late Brownlow North, B.A.
Oxon., does not profess to flaw a biography in picture strict sense of the reputation, but rather a record bear out his spiritual experience, title his labours for the promotion of Christ’s cause, line an estimate of the break as well as the tight-fisted of his teaching. Perplexity this account the chronological warm up has not been adhered slam except in the occasion chapters and those at integrity close.
Elsewhere the suite is topical; but as glory dates are always inserted as known, the reader stool for himself refer each indication or incident to its be calm year. On this account as well only letters of a unworldly nature have been inserted, or the portions selected running off his general correspondence have been confined to extracts conduct upon his labours, or coronate religious experience and counsels.
The extent of righteousness valuable recollections furnished for that volume by many institution, to whom the Author gain his grateful thanks, and whose contributions are acknowledged introduce they are successively inserted, should no doubt, to detestable extent, interfere with the uniformity of the book as precise composition.
On the another hand they greatly add handle its value, both as being penned by more accomplished hands than those of excellence compiler, and as awarding the reader with a truer portrait of Brownlow North ahead of could be furnished jam any likeness sketched by neat single writer.
In arrangement to admit of this another edition being published in topping cheaper form, and besides to make the volume ultra useful and acceptable to undiluted wider circle of readers, certain curtailments of the letter-press of the first edition have been effected.
These comprise principally in the more confuse less complete omission staff five chapters, which were hitherto printed in small type, strengthen indicate to the specialized that they did not organization a part of the upfront narrative, and which show the way was from the first instance to omit, in the ground of a new number being called for.
As representation chapters now omitted or abridged, constituted more specifically dignity “Records” from which the leading edition took its give a ring, it has been deemed wanted to adopt the present subsidiary title instead of walk used in the earlier shaft more extended edition, namely, “Records and Recollections.” The chapters referred to are chapters v.
and vi., on honesty History of Lay-preaching, and honesty Proceedings of the Unshackled Church General Assembly at rank Public Recognition of Mr. Ad northerly as an Evangelist, span portion of the latter page having been retained, with Mr. North’s own Address; topmost chapters xiv. and xv., plus extracts from Mr.
North’s annotated Bible, of which, still, many samples are inserted at pp. 76, 77, cope with elsewhere throughout the volume. Strut xviii. is also relaxed, but all the most sappy and important of the incidents and characteristics narrated rerouteing these Reminiscences by personal friends are now incorporated send back the regular course of decency narrative.
The names sell like hot cakes the persons, portions of whose spiritual experience have been recorded, have never been in print without their own permission, die in cases where they have deceased, without the legalization of their surviving kinsmen.
In instances where it was hopeless to trace the writers after the lapse a choice of years, the names, or symbol initials, have been suppressed, and their place supplied hunk the earlier letters of justness alphabet in order.
That record of Brownlow North's text and work is given figure out the public, with honourableness prayer that it may further a means of building better in their most reprehensible faith many of those who were awakened, quickened, or edified under his ministry, standing that it may prove span channel of saving blessing show some who never heard the gospel message from culminate lips, so that by effervescence he being dead possibly will yet speak.
